SIGMATEK continues on its successful course
in the “Middle Kingdom”

At the beginning of November the People’s Republic of China was the destination of a top-flight trade delegation from Austria led by Secretary of State Dr. Benita Ferrero-Waldner. Also present was the management of SIGMATEK, one of the leading international providers of automation systems with its headquarters at Lamprechtshausen near Salzburg.

Through cooperation with a prestigious Chinese business partner, the Salzburg enterprise successfully pushed its course of expansion forward. The numerous bilateral talks by the Secretary of State cemented Austria’s extremely encouraging position in the world market. SIGMATEK presented its area of expertise with its own stand in Shanghai at the “Factory Automation ASIA”, the most important trade fair for automation technologies in Asia. The Salzburg contingent can look back to a very successful appearance at the trade fair.

China, a market of hope
China’s changing economic policy has made the country one of the largest markets for the future; the People’s Republic will already be the strongest economic power in the world by 2015. The “privileged treatment of Austria by China is to be further fostered,” says Dr. Ferrero-Waldner. Still favored by strong economic growth estimated at 6%, China has become an important partner in trade for Austria. Austrian exports to China rose in 2002 by 38%. Also participating in the trade delegation under the direction of the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Moser, were the SIGMATEK managers Andreas Melkus, Theodor Kusejko and Marianne Kusejko.

The enterprise, with 180 personnel at Lamprechtshausen near Salzburg, develops automation solutions that accelerate and simplify work procedures by means of the most modern electronics. The enterprise founded in 1988 produces in a factory, which was opened in May 2001, with the most modern equipment in a production area of 2,500m². The enterprise, which conducts research and development, as well as handling production, sales and service from one location, shows an absolute will for finding problem solutions. This is reflected in an annual turnover of 26.8 million euro.

Success with sales partners
With participation in the trade delegation, SIGMATEK continues their very successful engagement in China, to date. After only two years the Chinese partner, Shanghai DIMENSION, which had assumed the sale of the entire SIGMATEK product range, was already among the leading enterprises in the branch in the People’s Republic. Together with the core business, the sale of automation components, Shanghai DIMENSION offers the complete product range of the DIAS-SPS system, from visualization devices, industrial PCs, and the DIAS-Servo system to software support, thus offering clients total solutions from a single source.

65% export share
With an export share of 65%, SIGMATEK assumes the position of an important global player and has sales branches in such international industrial centers as the USA, China, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, France, India, Indonesia, Serbia, Ukraine, Spain, Greece and the Netherlands.

20 nations at the “Factory Automation ASIA”
The “Factory Automation ASIA” in Shanghai enjoys growing popularity and this year could book a 63% increase in attendance figures. 909 exhibitors from 20 nations introduced themselves at the trade fair, which was mostly frequented by trade specialists. Due to the Chinese partner, Shanghai DIMENSION, and the energetic support of Helmut Fritz (of the German management) and Ehrenfried Machalka (export manager), SIGMATEK was represented with its own stand and could present the entire product range and enjoy great interest from those attending. The technical demands on the strong growth market of China are already “westernized” and are in accord with the level of international technology standards, which allows SIGMATEK to take advantage of a significant market potential.

Top-flight reference clients: General Motors and TONGJI University

There is great interest in China in the modernization of machines, whereby a general trend from low cost to complex solutions can be seen. The engine check stands equipped with SIGMATEK control technology were viewed on a visit to the General Motors Shanghai factory. This illustrates the expanding presence of SIGMATEK in the automobile industry and in specialized mechanical engineering.
The prestigious TONGJI University in Shanghai also uses products from SIGMATEK at a check stand for research in the fields of private-vehicle engines and fuel cells. An exact analysis of exhaust fumes is especially decisive in of research of this type. The support of TONGJI University and mutual cooperation should also be continued. SIGMATEK solutions have already proved themselves as best quality to a Chinese textile-machine manufacturer, who will be presenting his machines equipped with the latest technology at the international specialist textile trade fair. The area of applications for the DIAS system range from motion-application through rapid control and on to visualization.

Fast and individual automation solutions
No limits with the DIAS system

A change from a PLC-CPU to an industrial PC and vice versa is possible at any time with no extra wiring. Because the hardware in the DIAS system is fully compatible, all components can be combined to meet individual needs.

The new DVI interface on the industrial PC enables the installation of reasonably priced terminals that can be connected from a distance. The LASAL project software supports all variation possibilities because it can be implemented without platform dependence. The DIAS system will be presented at the SPS/IPC/DRIVES Trade Fair in Hall 7 on Stand 7-140.

Full hardware compatibility
Thanks to the full compatibility of all hardware components , a problem-free change from a CPU to a compact IPC, and back, is possible at any time. All module plug devices are coordinated with each other and there is absolutely no wiring expenditure. Thus the change from a CPU to a C-IPC is perfectly easy. Simply load the CPU user program into the C-IPC, disconnect the CPU and connect the C-IPC, finished.

DVI interface
The new compact IPC is equipped with a DVI interface. This makes connecting reasonably priced terminals possible, which can be placed at a distance of up to 30m.

The compact IPC is a universal device
Because the hardware is fully compatible with the CPUs and the terminals can be connected at greater distances, the compact IPC can assume the task of control or visualization or both simultaneously.

LASAL project software
All of the variation possibilities are supported by the LASAL projecting software. Because LASAL can be implemented without platform dependence, this software can be used for all CPUs, industrial PCs and terminals.

The limits disappear
Due to the complete compatibility of the entire product range; the system of hardware and software components from SIGMATEK offers a flexible and combinable solution. With this system, the former limits for automating solutions disappear and the user is left with an unlimited possibility of combinations.

Small, practice-oriented and modern
Compact Industrial PC by SIGMATEK

With the new “C-IPC” industrial PC, SIGMATEK continues to push development of the “compact” DIAS series forward. The modernly designed device is only 145mm wide, 105mm high with a depth of 120mm. The C-IPC can therefore find a place in small switch-boxes or terminal boxes. The C-IPC is fully compatible with the existing DIAS series and has the DIAS interfaces already installed, which means the C-IPC can be plugged into the C-DIAS modules carrier.

The design allows simple and convenient handling with respect to operation and installation of additional components. Together with the standard PC interfaces, the C-IPC also has an integrated 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection and a USB connection. The DVI interface enables other reasonably priced operator terminals to be connected. To meet practical demands, a 24V DC network is already installed in the industrial PC.

Practicality through simple handling
The easy access to the battery, expansion card and memory card enables maximum serviceability. The installation and dismantling of components is done quickly and easily. The cover screw can be removed with one hand. LEDs ensure control and display the current operating state, such as voltage supply, RUN and Errors. The C-IPC has a two-digit numerical display for configuration and the display of error messages. The C-IPC can be equipped with a UPS to increase operating and data safety. In the standard version, the required connections are available on the outside for easy installation of batteries.

Compact flash memory card as mass storage
A compact flash card serves as an exchange medium in the new C-IPC in place of the usual fixed disk. The standardized memory cards can be installed as program or data memory in two cardholders. The compact flashes are addressed as internal drives from the operating system. Through the elimination of rotating parts, the industrial PC is also exceptionally suitable for rough work environments.

Scaleable power
Through the modular set-up, the C-IPC guarantees the highest flexibility. It can be ideally adapted to fit different requirements. A special characteristic in regard to adaptability is the scalability of performance. Processors from 200 MHz to 1.2 GHz are available in the standard version. Operations with slower processors don’t require a fan. The main memory options range from 32 MB to 512 MB.

High overall system performance
Due to the excellent performance of the new device, the DIAS series offers extremely high overall system performance . The LASAL project software is used for application, while the Soft SPS LASAL CLASS takes care of control. With LASAL SCREEN, demanding visualization can also be implemented. If the C-IPC is plugged directly into the C-DIAS module carrier, high-speed communication is achieved. This means a scan rate of 30 million inputs/outputs per second, and an access time of only 0.28µs on one byte.

Interfaces
The C-IPC has the following interfaces available: Ethernet 10/100 Mbps, RS232, RS232/RS485, DIAS-bus, and a CAN bus for the terminal connection as well as a CAN bus for connection to the CPU . An S-DVI to connect a SIGMATEK operator terminal and a USB interface are also included . These allow the practical connection of additional devices, such as keyboard, mouse and back-up mediums. Moreover, an RGB interface is included for the connection of an extra monitor to support service and start-up . An expansion slot for an additional interface card with Ethernet, LPT and two RS232 interfaces is also available.

Control technology to meet all demands – application report:
SIGMATEK convinces with flexible solutions

Flexibility and client-orientated solutions are essential SIGMATEK success components. The renowned enterprise from the automation and control-technology branch can look back on many years of an extremely fruitful partnership with Wittmann Synthetics Devices, one of the largest worldwide robot manufacturers. Both partners show the highest degree of flexibility in creating client-specific applications, which is the basis for their continued rapid expansion in the world market.

Wittmann relies on SIGMATEK
Wittman Synthetics Devices has been a specialist for almost 20 years in the manufacture of innovative robot units and has supplied automated robots for injection-molding machines successfully for many years with SIGMATEK. “Custom-made technology” is the slogan that distinguishes the worldwide robot manufacturer, Wittmann Synthetics Devices. The portfolio of units ranges from simple pneumatic/motorized systems to high-performance CNC linear carbon-technology robots, which ensure rapid removal of finished parts from the injection-molding machine. “ In SIGMATEK, an electro-technical partner was found that is as equally flexible as we are”, explains Eng. Andreas Klackl, manager of the robot department at Wittmann Synthetics Devices.

Individual solutions for demanding client needs
The especially clear know-how in control technology and the flexible, innovative product range are the foundation of need-orientated client solutions from the firm of SIGMATEK. A product profile is created with the client, which is used to fulfill all essential demands. The most critical factor in the automation of an injection-molding machine is the mold-opening time, which means the period before a finished part is removed from the mold. Because this removal process represents a non-productive period, and all other parameters are physically defined, there is therefore very little reduction potential in the injection process itself. “The SIGMATEK client consultants were the first who were able offer a specific CNC control that could meet these requirements. It was the basis for our many years of cooperation,” Klackl maintains.

Flexibility in a modular system

At the beginning of our partnership with Wittmann, the essential requirement was to deliver decentralized CNC control units . “ That was not as common 20 years ago as it is today. The performance and the speed of the CNC unit were primarily the most essential criteria,” Eng. Klackl explains. “ At he exhibition, K92, we presented the first CNC control system using a CAN bus connection to a robot. That was a great innovation at the time since classic wiring from the control box of the robot module was still used”, remembers engr. Klackl.

The CNC units delivered by SIGMATEK are based on the same fundamental concept: the core of the control is applied as a double CPU solution, which means a CPU is responsible for the functionality of the robot and another CPU is responsible for visualization and operator guidance. Depending on requirements, the control unit can be equipped with corresponding inputs and outputs. SIGMATEK has a broad standard range of products with many modular components available. The modules produced especially for use with robots are then installed in the basic units.

C-DIAS: compact constructional form with high packing density
In order to meet another critical demand in the field of robotics , namely the minimizing of moving parts. SIGMATEK also meets the client’s requirement to minimize the wiring as much as possible. In the beginning every thing was done using the CAN bus, later the fast SIGMATEK DIAS bus was added. The innovative C-DIAS product series was developed to meet new client and market demands. Special attention was given to the compact construction of the individual C‑DIAS modules. Due to the dense packaging of the modules, the assembled area comprises only 1.9cm 2 per I/O point, which is very small and thus eliminates the need for a switchbox. “Whenever we develop a new product, we meet with the SIGMATEK hardware and software experts and together we create an optimal special package, which are rapidly and innovatively implemented by SIGMATEK,” Klackl says. “Because in the field of robot manufacturing, we are especially subject to high technical demands that must guarantee feasibility.”

Highspeed-Control with Power-CPU

SIGMATEK presents a significant further development in the DIAS product family at the Hanover Trade Fair. Together with the especially compact construction of the new DIAS modules, C-DIAS with Power-CPU is distinguished by impressive high-speed communication. The SPS system will be presented from the 7th to the 12th of April at the Hanover Trade Fair, the largest industrial trade fair worldwide, in Hall 9, Stand D 61.

SIGMATEK provides the greatest performance capacity with Power-CPU in a modern design
C-DIAS with Power-CPU is the name of the new development from the house of SIGMATEK. It offers extensive performance capacity in a modern design. The C-DIAS CPU has the same power performance as the existing DIAS-CPU. With the INTEL processor, the command-execution time is only 0.3µs. According to model, the C-DIAS standard CPU has a DIAS bus, a CAN bus or a RS232 interface. The Power-CPU has 808 kilobytes of program memory and 768 kilobytes of data memory available for the appropriate user program. The processor module has a two-digit decimal display for configuration and output of an error message and is distinguished by its modern appearance as well as its clear status recognition.

High-speed control in a compact construction
The SIGMATEK product developers gave special attention to the compact construction of the individual C-DIAS modules to meet the demands of clients and the market Due to the high package density of the module – with a single-module width of 25mm – the occupied area is only 1.9cm2 per I/O point. On the module carrier, which also carries the Power-CPU, communication between the CPU and I/O modules takes place at high speed via parallel data transfer. This means that with a scan rate of 30 million I/Os per second, and an access time of 270ns per byte. Via fiber-optic transmission and/or a double-twisted-pair cable, up to eight module carriers, each with eight modules, can be linked via the DIAS bus.

Real time through synchronization and without jitter
The C-DIAS pulse synchronization method allows for practically jitter-free peripheral access. A stable pulse is achieved through the use of a synchronized pulse signal on the bus system. The CPU sends a pulse to all intelligent bus participants, which can synchronize to this signal. It is assured that the values are read-in practically jitter-free from the CPU. The digital servo-drives are also synchronized via the DIAS bus. In this way the position-control circuit is closed jitter-free. This means that for the regulator-technology applications, the regulating quality, and the motion-control applications, the exactitude of a machine is multiply increased.

LASAL projecting software
The SIGMATEK LASAL projecting software unites all functionalities for resolving all automation tasks – all-in-on. With the individual LASAL CLASS, SCREEN, TEXT and MOTION tools, all tasks such as projecting, visualizing and motion control are realized with a single system. LASAL is a worldwide unique projecting tool, which has object-orientated programming with client-server technology and graphic display. Through its central data management, access to the individual tools is possible at all times and on all of the variables in the system. In this way, projecting errors can be avoided and application can be made faster. This also means a reduction of time and expenditure of costs for the client.
